Job Description Summary

Responsible for performing laboratory testing assigned to the department. Recognize unusual test results and resolve discrepancies. Ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously including troubleshooting instruments and other problems/issues. Maintain knowledge of all current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) required to work effectively. Develop, draft, revise SOPs, training documents, validation/verification plans, test cases, and validation/verification summaries. Maintain excellent communication with the Department and other Laboratory Services personnel.

Perform a variety of complex immunohematological tests that are required for safe transfusion of blood and blood products. Prepare blood and blood products, including those that are irradiated, leukoreduced, thawed, pooled, divided and/or aliquoted in syringes. Assist with the maintenance of quality control of blood refrigerators and freezers, cell washers and centrifuges to include daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning, alarm checks, temperature checks and basic troubleshooting.

Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing. Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Training and Education: A Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related medical or scientific discipline

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC). If not certified, must be registry eligible and successfully obtain certification within the first year of employment.
