General Statement of Duties

This vacancy is for the 2024-2025 SY


The Gifted Young Scholars Academy at L. Douglas Wilder Middle School provides a comprehensive and rigorous interdisciplinary educational opportunity for students in grades 6-8. Students must be identified gifted in the area of General Intellect to apply. In addition to mastery of foundational content and skills, students attending GYSA are expected to master advanced competencies across all content areas. The Academy will provide opportunities for leadership, inquiry based learning, literacy and scientific analysis, service learning, arts integration, and problem based learning that focuses on topics of strength and interest. This comprehensive instructional program is designed around the cognitive characteristics and learning styles of gifted children, providing an integrated curriculum incorporating focused reflection, interaction, and discussion.

Applicants must have ability to plan, organize and deliver instruction to meet individual and group needs utilizing state guidelines and division curriculum. Exhibits considerable knowledge of learning theory, curriculum and best practices in working with gifted student. Acts in the best interests of students and models appropriate behaviors in all professional interactions.

Essential Duties

    • Plans daily instructional activities for all students, demonstrating knowledge of subject matter and using state Standards of Learning and the curriculum of the district' gifted program
    • Uses current student, school and division data to plan instruction
    • Develops formative and summative tests, using multiple tools to assess student learning on an ongoing basis, and alters instruction to meet group and individual needs
    • Maintains order within the classroom and school with proactive classroom management and a well-organized learning environment
    • Maintains records of student performance and attendance, and communicates this effectively with students and their parents
    • Selects, requisitions, and uses a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of gifted students
    • Communicates and coordinates instruction with other staff (special ed, gifted, remediation staff, volunteers, etc.) relative to student learning
    • Stays abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools
    • Maintains professional manner when interacting with students, parents, patrons, community agencies and colleagues
    • Incorporates and models appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning
    • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

A valid professional teaching certificate is required with an endorsement in Middle School English—gifted education endorsement preferred.

Minimum annual starting salary: $54,602 Bachelors, $57,223 Masters *


(*The compensation listed above is based on the current 2023-24 SY compensation rates and may be subject to any increases provided in the 2024-25 HCPS school board budget to be released in May.)
