Job Description Summary

This director level position is responsible for managing the data services team responsible for developing and managing the extraction, transformation and loading of data to and from electronic medical records, data repositories, complex healthcare IT systems, and a data warehouse for research. The individual will have a firm understanding of data warehousing, (including the analysis, validation, and cleansing of the data) and HIPAA security and privacy regulations that must be applied to existing and developed systems and workflows. This is a senior level position that will require leading, supporting, hiring, and training other staff in the architecting, creating, and management of integrated data solutions, creating complex queries across multiple databases to extract data for research and project management responsibilities.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities:
Data Architect – Actively own and lead key project tasks such as data integration across data sources, data ETL (extract, transform, load) and database design, including FHIR and common data models such as PCORNet and OMOP. Develop specifications for data stores and interfaces to support multiple projects. Work with leadership to determine and integrate institutional reporting requirements. Consult with stakeholders and clients to design solutions to problems. Serve in a mentorship capacity to other developers. 30%

ETL Developer - Build and implement ETL for new data workflows to integrate with the research data warehouse, both on-premises and establish/integrate with a Cloud presence at Microsoft Azure. Work with vendors and other stakeholders at MUSC to establish secure data feeds to and from new data sources. Build and/or enhance automated processes. 20%

Director, Data Services Team – Assist staff in the prioritization of work, review performance of staff annually, hire and train new staff, coordinate projects and staff resources with other department managers, report progress on data projects to leadership on a regular basis and support staff in the projects they manage. 15%

Senior data analyst (servers as the senior data Honest Broker): Provide consultation and advice to research investigators and help them define their data requirements. With guidance from a data request and review committee, ensure that HIPAA guidelines are strictly followed, and that all data provided is approved by the IRB. Act as a liaison between the investigator and the clinical data warehouse. Assist in training new honest brokers and provide consultation to other honest brokers to ensure requests are fulfilled to meet stakeholder requirements. 15%


Reporting and analytics as a service - Design and maintain an intake process for analytics and reporting requests for the organization. Provide consultation and mentorship to other data analysts to ensure requests are fulfilled to meet stakeholder requirements. Work with other departments on campus to ensure requests are fulfilled by the appropriate technical team. 10%


Contribute to educational and organizational missions by attending and presenting at conferences, guest lecturing to classes or departments, and/or providing one-on-one training to investigators and their teams as needed. 5%

A bachelor's degree in related information technology or related field and four years experience in business administration, computer science, mathematics, engineering, management information science, networking-telecommunications, and/or data processing. Relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis
