Job Description

Job Summary: The Department of Oral Health Sciences (OHS) invites applications for a Research Specialist II position. The candidate will conduct biological research studying immune response mechanisms regulating periodontal disease and microbiome effects on skeletal metabolism.

Pay scale/Salary Range: UNIV Band 5: $35,360.00 - $50,394.00 - $65,429.00

Job Duties:

10% - Genotyping transgenic mice and overseeing the crossing / breeding of a transgenic mouse colony. This duty requires weaning pups and meticulous colony management.

10% - Performing murine survival surgeries. Assisting with euthanizing experimental animals and isolating tissues and cells for downstream assays and analyses.

10% - Isolating and culturing primary murine osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and macrophages for in vitro studies. This requires performing magnetic cell sorting to enrich for pre-cursor cells.

10% - Isolate and label cells for flow cytometry. Perform flow cytometric analysis of targeted immune cell populations.

10% - Perform ex vivo micro-CT imaging of bone specimens from experimental animals. Utilize micro-CT analysis software to carry out bone morphometric analyses.

10% - Perform histochemical / immunohistochemical staining of histological tissue sections. Carry out immunofluorescent microscopic imaging and analysis of stained tissue sections.

10% - Carry out RNA biology assays with tissue and cell isolates. This duty requires being able to perform RNA isolation, reverse transcription, and quantitative real-time PCR.

10% - Carry out protein biology assays with tissue and cell isolates. This duty requires being able to perform ELISA and western blot assays.

10% - Organize and assists with laboratory ordering and laboratory compliance. Compile data and keep complete precise records including an up-to-date laboratory notebook.

10% - Support the activities of students, residents, postdoctoral scholars and other research personnel in the laboratory. Maintain equipment and instruments used for experiments.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.

Preferred Experience & Additional Skills: Interact and communicate well with others , work independently, and read / interpret the scientific literature. Basic knowledge of computers and software to include spread sheets, graphic packages, and statistical packages are desirable.

Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous)
Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous)
