Job Description

As a Patient Care Tech (PCT) at MUSC, you will provide essential support to patients and healthcare professionals, contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care. Your role will involve assisting with daily patient activities, monitoring vital signs, and ensuring patients' comfort and safety. With your compassionate demeanor and strong work ethic, you will play a vital role in promoting positive patient outcomes and enhancing the overall patient experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with Activities of Daily Living: Help patients with tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating, ensuring their comfort and dignity at all times.

Monitor Vital Signs: Take and record patients' vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, and report any significant changes to the nursing staff.

Provide Mobility Assistance: Assist patients with moving and positioning, including transferring in and out of bed, walking, and using mobility aids, to prevent complications and maintain mobility.

Perform Basic Nursing Procedures: Perform basic nursing procedures under the direction of registered nurses, such as collecting specimens, changing dressings, and applying simple wound care techniques.

Assist with Patient Transportation: Transport patients to various departments within the healthcare facility for diagnostic tests, procedures, and appointments, ensuring their safety and comfort during transit.

Support Patient Safety: Maintain a safe environment for patients by ensuring that rooms and equipment are clean and well-maintained, and promptly addressing any safety hazards or concerns.

Provide Emotional Support: Offer emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families, listening to their concerns and providing empathetic care during times of distress or anxiety.

Document Patient Information: Record pertinent patient information accurately and timely in electronic medical records, including vital signs, intake and output, and patient care activities.

Collaborate with Healthcare Team: Communicate effectively with nurses, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care activities and ensure continuity of care.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program or equivalent healthcare training preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Patient Care Tech, nursing assistant, or similar role in a healthcare setting is advantageous.
  • Current certification as a nursing assistant (CNA) or equivalent certification required.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, infection control practices, and patient safety guidelines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Compassionate demeanor and genuine desire to help others, with a commitment to providing patient-centered care.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move patients and heavy objects, with proper body mechanics and assistance as needed, to prevent injury.
  • Stamina and endurance to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods during shifts.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with procedures, and operating medical equipment.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to observe and assess patients, read documentation, and communicate effectively in a healthcare setting.
