Job Description

The Patient Care Technician II role at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a senior position within the patient care team, responsible for providing direct patient care and support under the supervision of nurses and healthcare providers. This position requires advanced clinical skills, patient interaction, and a commitment to delivering compassionate care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the delivery of patient care, including but not limited to bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, and ambulating patients according to individual care plans and nursing instructions.
  • Perform basic clinical tasks, such as vital signs monitoring, specimen collection, glucose monitoring, and EKGs, ensuring accuracy and adherence to protocols.
  • Assist with patient transfers, positioning, and mobility exercises, using proper lifting and safety techniques to prevent injury to patients and staff.
  • Maintain a clean and organized patient environment, including changing linens, tidying patient rooms, and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Provide emotional support and comfort to patients and their families, addressing concerns, answering questions, and promoting a positive patient experience.
  • Document patient information, care provided, and observations accurately in electronic health record (EHR) systems or patient charts, ensuring compliance with documentation standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members to communicate patient status, report changes in condition, and contribute to coordinated patient care.
  • Assist in emergency response situations, following established protocols and assisting with CPR, first aid, or other lifesaving measures as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing education, training, and skill development to maintain competency and enhance clinical capabilities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and move patients, and perform physical tasks requiring strength and dexterity.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for performing clinical procedures, handling equipment, and using computer systems.
  • Effective communication skills, including verbal and nonverbal communication, to interact with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm and focused in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed in a healthcare setting.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a patient care technician program or relevant certification preferred.
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a patient care technician or nursing assistant in a clinical setting, with proficiency in basic patient care tasks and clinical procedures.
Knowledge of medical terminology, infection control practices, and patient safety standards.
Excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, and a patient-centered approach to care.
