In addition to its hospitals, Duke Health has an extensive, geographically dispersed network of outpatient facilities that include primary care offices, urgent care centers, multi-specialty clinics and outpatient surgery centers.

Director of Hospital and Health System Communications

Supporting the President of Duke University Hospital (DUH) and SVP of Duke University Health System (DUHS), the Director of Hospital and Health System Communications provides leadership and direction to DUH and DUHS entities on strategic communications planning/implementation, brand communications, business continuity communications, employee engagement, community outreach and organizational change management.

As a member of the DUHS marketing and communications team reporting to the Asst. VP of Brand Communications, the successful candidate plays an important role in sharing our Duke Health story and bringing our values to life across multiple audiences, stakeholder groups, community partnerships and channels. Includes experience implementing creative virtual and in-person engagement activities (digital platforms, audio/visual production, mobile/text technologies, print collateral, sponsorships, and events-town halls, roadshows, conferences, service launches, community outreach activities and grand openings).

Key areas of accountability include executive messaging, internal, clinical operations and strategic communications, speaker preparation, change impact initiatives, employee engagement, stakeholder analysis, event planning, project management, social media, and brand communications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • (30%) Develop executive and team member communications for DUH, including messaging and presentation content, events, multimedia channels and strategies that create a sense of pride, belonging and purpose for our more than 11,000 physicians, providers, and staff around our core value of Caring for Our Patients, Their Loved Ones and Each Other.
  • (25%) Plan, develop, manage, analyze and measure strategic communication plans that span the clinical enterprise of Duke Health, with a particular emphasis on DUH providers and staff.
  • (10%) Establish best practices and collaborate closely with DUH HR, administrative leaders, and communications colleagues at other hospital entities and in ambulatory care to ensure a consistent message and brand experience for our providers, patients and teams.
  • (10%) Provide coaching, career development, creative resources for a DUH-based team of communicators and lead other hospital and entity communicators through influence and collaboration in a dotted line org structure.
  • (10%) Plan, test, evaluate and operationalize new brand communications and engagement channels that improve the reach and effectiveness of our tactics.
  • (5%) Manage a learning agenda for hospital and health system communications functions and lead a test-and-learn collaborative approach to reaching diverse audiences and local organizational cultures with helpful and engaging content.
  • (5%) Provide timely and accurate analyses of budgets, project proposals and public relations trends impacting DUH and DUHS communications functions in order to assist senior health system leadership in performing their responsibilities.
  • (5%) Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, marketing, communications or a related field is required. A Master’s degree or commensurate experience in health care or community-based organizations is preferred.


Work requires six years of experience in writing, public relations, communications or a related discipline to include a minimum of two years of experience in the health care field. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
