Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences invites applications for a full-time, 12-month non-tenured faculty appointment at the level of Assistant or Associate rank to serve in a leadership role as a core faculty member for the hybrid format of the Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) Program. This eight-semester OTD program is a blend of online and on-campus activities that provide the same curriculum as the residential program. This hybrid position allows the faculty member to live remotely; however, OTD faculty members must be able to travel and stay in Charleston for designated periods each semester for teaching and/or required program events. The successful faculty candidate is expected to enhance current teaching and mentoring activities within the OTD program, develop a scholarly agenda, and participate in community and professional service appropriate for the faculty rank. Combinations of areas of clinical expertise are welcome, and we encourage interdisciplinary and diverse perspectives.

We seek to fill multiple hybrid faculty positions with various specialties, backgrounds, and expertise covering the depth and breadth of the OTD curriculum. Core faculty in the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program are expected to teach an agreed-upon teaching load within their area of expertise or to meet the needs of the Division. We seek candidates at the forefront of driving occupational therapy education forward by implementing innovative teaching models that empower student learning. Ideal candidates should demonstrate engagement in the national conversation about the future of occupational therapy education.

Ideally, we seek a collegial individual who either has a terminal academic doctorate in a discipline appropriate for teaching responsibilities (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) or a Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree with certification credentials appropriate for their teaching responsibilities. This is a non-tenured track faculty position with a salary and rank commensurate with qualifications.

Candidates from all clinical and teaching backgrounds relevant to rehabilitation will be fully considered. Areas of need are prioritized based on the curriculum and include: pediatrics, mental health, and musculoskeletal. Candidates for Assistant or Associate rank must have a proven track record of scholarship, graduate student advising, and teaching at the Doctoral level consistent with MUSC-ranked faculty. Ideal candidates would identify with the MUSC College of Health Professions’ core values: Collaboration, Creativity, Diversity, Excellence, and Integrity.

Essential Tasks and Functions:

The faculty member must demonstrate the following knowledge, skill, and ability or be able to explain and demonstrate that the faculty member can perform the job's essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skill, and ability.

  • Demonstrate the ability to adhere to the core values of MUSC and that of the physical therapy profession.
  • Demonstrate contemporary knowledge and skill/expertise in the areas of assigned teaching.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally, written and oral, both online and in-person, with administration, faculty, staff, lab instructors, and students associated with the program.
  • Demonstrate working with others, collaborating, and interacting effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, including students, administration, faculty, staff, and lab instructors.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be organized and detail-oriented with activities within the program, including but not limited to communication, course planning, curriculum assessment, course management, and assignments.
  • Demonstrates abilities to handle various responsibilities and multi-task as a full-time faculty member within the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program, including teaching, service, scholarship, and coaching students.
  • Demonstrate professional license or be eligible for licensure in South Carolina (or compact) in addition to their state of residence.
  • Display strong computer skills to meet the needs of our online didactic instructional format.
  • Display an ability to conduct evidence-informed teaching (based on the scholarship of teaching and learning), integrate technology within the classroom, and build a student-centered community within the online classroom.

Additionally, the successful candidate will understand higher education and contemporary clinical practice appropriate for leadership in occupational therapy and knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting didactic and clinical education, students, and the profession of occupational therapy within the United States.

Teaching and Education Responsibilities:

Teach courses as agreed upon with the hybrid OTD director and with the workloads aligned with the policies in the faculty handbook.
