Job Purpose:
The nighttime ICU APP (ACNP/PA-C) is a valued member of the intensive care team and his/her primary responsibility is the management of the ICU patients at night. There are currently 3 ICUs (MICU, SICU and CVICU) with an average census of 30 patients. This position will be supported by an in-house hospitalist and an on-call intensivist. The ICU APP contributes to excellence in patient care, quality, and safety, and provides leadership to the organization and profession.

Required Minimum Training and Education:
The successful candidate will have completed an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program or an A.R. C. approved Physician Assistant program. Current licensure/eligibility as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of South Carolina or as a Physician Assistant by the NCCPA and Board of Medical Examiners required. South Carolina Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant DEA certificate to prescribe from the State Medical/Nursing Board will also be required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association must be kept current.
Excellent oral & written communication skills, strong analytical abilities, an ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment, and critical thinking skills are required.

Preferred Qualification:
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or PA with critical care experience and/ or who has completed an APP fellowship in critical care.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:
Current licensure/eligibility as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of South Carolina or as a Physician Assistant by the NCCPA and Board of Medical Examiners required. South Carolina Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant DEA certificate to prescribe from the State Medical/Nursing Board will also be required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:
- Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
- Evaluates and treats based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice protocols and collaborative scope of practice agreement

Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief:
- Arterial line placement
- Central line placement
- Dialysis catheter placement
- Chest tube removal
- Chest tube placement
- Endotracheal intubation
- Thoracentesis
- Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consult with the attending physician or the collaborating physician

- Documentation and billing for direct care provided
- Work towards efficient throughput and do early rounds on patients that can transfer out of the ICU and transfer out before day shift
- Works towards continuity of care and do evening rounds with increased emphasis on the critically ill patients
- Work towards improving quality of care by reducing CAUTI and CLABSI and evaluate line necessity
- Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
- Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
- Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
- Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
- Potential to precepts students and MUSC enrolled advanced practice provider students; and facilitates the learning of other new team members

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
