General Statement of Duties

Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, May 17, 2021.

Performs recreation work on a County-wide basis for the Sports Tourism Division for sports fields and gymnasiums in an hourly capacity; does related work as required.

Essential Duties

This is an hourly position that will work nights and weekends. Hours scheduled per week will vary but may not exceed 29 hours worked.

The Sports Tourism Recreation Instructor will work at both county school gymnasiums and county park sports fields. The recreation instructor will be in charge of turning on scoreboards and lights; making the call of field playability; assisting in parking duties such as monitoring parking lots and directing traffic; and acting as a liaison between Recreation & Parks and the group assigned to specific facilities during the spring, summer and fall seasons. In addition, during tournaments and other recreation activities, the recreation instructor may be asked to perform basic field preparation duties. The Recreation Instructor will also be responsible for monitoring gymnasiums during the winter season; will establish relationships with the various user groups; and will be available to trouble-shoot and assist as needed when onsite at the gym.

The recreation instructor will be assigned to work evenings and weekends throughout the year. This includes March through November for outdoor sports; December through March for indoor sports; and occasionally as needed for day-time hours on weekdays during times of high volume in the county parks and school field sites (summer tournaments).

Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of community recreation; knowledge of general recreation leadership methods; knowledge of techniques and/or tools used in general or specialized recreation program area; working knowledge of first aid methods and necessary safety precautions necessary for recreation work; ability to stimulate interest in and appreciation for the various aspects of the activities; ability to deal effectively with groups and to maintain discipline and/or control; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public; ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school and one (1) year of related work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Additional Information

One year experience in a sports-related position preferred.

Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet department needs.

First Aid, CPR, AED certifications required. Training provided if necessary.

Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds to move supplies and equipment as needed.
