Assistant Coach for Speech and Debate
The Assistant Coach will assist the Heach Coach/Advisor for Speech and Debate at Acton Boxborough Regional High School works with a large group of enthusiastic, creative and competitive group of 9 – 12 graders. The team meets twice weekly on Monday and Friday after school until 5pm for practice. Tournaments are held primarily on Saturdays beginning in October (approx. 2 per month).
Responsibilities of the Assistant Coach will be to assist the Head Coach/advisor with the following but is not limited to:
- Collecting and maintaining student registration materials/forms (both school required and team specific)
- Collecting and maintaining student and parent contact information (phone, email, REMIND)
- Supervising practices from September through early April, teaching and coaching events as ability allows (most of this is done by Varsity members)
- Determining the schedule of practices and tournaments for the team (Aug/Sept timeframe)
- Mentoring/managing the student team leaders (captains) as they teach/mentor/manage their peers
- Holding a Parent Night in October to introduce the team and leaders, encourage parents to volunteer as judges/chaperons and maintain communication throughout the season.
- Coordinate fundraising/social events with the team booster group
- Plan and execute with committee help (students/parents) Year End Celebration to wrap up the year, honor seniors and all community members who helped the teamAttending team sanctioned tournament trips or arranging for appropriate adult (CORI cleared and trained) coverage
- Arranging bus transportation or car pools for student travel to tournaments
- Managing team finances with the assistance of the school bookkeeper
- Attend the MSDL Annual Meeting in May to connect with colleagues from other schools
- Maintain/monitor team social media (FB group, Google Site)
- Maintain communication with school administration regarding team activities
- Promoting the team in the school and wider community
- Maintaining team memberships in the Massachusetts Speech and Debate League and two National Leagues
- Assisting students/parents with travel plans for National Championship tournaments in May and June
