Description

The VCU Health Professional Coding Surgical department if seeking a full time Medical Coder III that will translates authenticated provider documentation and/or operative reports and makes the determination as to the appropriate CPT, ICD-9/10 codes for billing of services rendered by providers for specialized complex coding from surgical and operative notes or from complex clinical specialties. Must comply with all applicable State, Federal and insurance regulations and guidelines in order to apply codes for consultation, diagnosis, surgical procedures, etc. Identifies, analyzes and resolves assigned denial payment issues according to established departmental policies and procedures or assists in resolving all coding associated payer denials by pulling charts, missing operative reports and gathering information requested by insurance company and/or supervisor. Assists in the resolution of payment denials, or independently resolves selected denials.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

      • One of the following certifications required:
        • Radiology Coding Certification (RCC) by Radiology Coding Certification Board or
        • Procedural Coder (CPC) by the American Academy of Procedural Coders or
        • Certified Coding Specialist Physician-based (CCS-P) by the American Health Information Management Association or
        • Equivalent/comparable coding certification
      • Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder Certification (CIRCC) preferred

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:

      • Current RCC, CPC, CCS-P or equivalent/comparable coding certification required
      • Current CIRCC certification preferred

Experience REQUIRED:

      • Minimum of three (3) years of third party medical billing and coding experience from a narrative/report format
      • Previous work experience using a personal computer and various billing/coding software applications

Experience PREFERRED

      • Previous work experience in reimbursement practices and procedures

Education/training REQUIRED:

      • High School Diploma or equivalent

Education/training PREFERRED:

      • Post High School courses in an allied health or healthcare-related field (anatomy, physiology, health information management
