Job Summary:
The STEM teacher implements a flexible secondary STEM instructional program that provides an integrative approach to learning and a class environment favorable to academic and personal growth; establishes appropriate and effective rapport with students; motivates students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education, in accordance with each student's ability; and establishs appropriate, effective relationships with parents and with other staff members.
Essential Functions:
Implements an integrative STEM approach to classroom instruction using the curriculum adopted by the Board of Education and other grade-appropriate learning activities/projects. These learning experiences should be differentiated and assist students in developing an understand that STEM Education is an integrated approach across disciplines and connected to other disciplines beyond science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Incorporates knowledge of the following standards: Next Generation Science Standards, PA Mathematics Standards, PA Science and Technology Standards as learning activities/projects are designed and implemented.
Promotes a culture of STEM-based initiatives and innovation while serving as a resource for STEM collaboration and growth.
Assists classroom teachers with the incorporation of STEM activities within classrooms.
Elicits student conceptions, reasoning and understanding through multiple forms of meaningful assessments including formative/summative and individual/group. Assessment design should enable students to utilize strategies for self-assessment to build their capacity to monitor their own learning. Diverse and authentic assessment practices should assist the teacher with monitoring and adjusting instruction across STEM disciplines and grade levels.
Develops lesson plans that utilize inquiry-based teaching and learning methodologies and incorporates problem solving approaches and the design process to answer complex questions, engage in critical thinking, investigate societal issues, and develop solutions for challenges and real-word problems.
Incorporates relevant technology to advance student understanding of concepts and content.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a safe and inspiring learning atmosphere in the classroom. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day or beyond the working day when involved in an extended field trip or learning activity.
Identifies student needs and collaborates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve social, emotional, behavioral, and academic issues.
Administers individual and group standardized assessments in accordance with district assessment program. Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and reports grades as required by District policy.
Communicates with parents, as needed, through conferences and other means to discuss student’s progress and interpret the school program.
Demonstrates understanding of and abides by federal, state, and local school laws and regulations; mandated programs; District policies and administrative regulations. Reviews and abides by Pennsylvania Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators.
Maintains professional competence through professional development education activities provided by the district or through self-selected activities.
Reflects on successes and areas of growth as a teacher, seeks to improve performance, and responds to feedback.
Selects and requisitions books and instructional aides; maintains required inventory records.
Participates in curriculum development programs as required, faculty committees, and the sponsorship of student activities.
