POSITION TITLE: CAREER TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION (CTI/Special Education Services and Support)

DEPARTMENT: CTAE

WORK DAYS: 190

REPORTS TO: Principal

PAY SCALE: Based on Degree & Years of Experience

JOB SUMMARY: The Career Technical Instruction Program is designed to support students with disabilities enrolled in regular CTAE career pathway classes/programs with development of entry level employment skills, appropriate employability behaviors, self-advocacy skills, and leadership experiences. The CTI Coordinator serves to provide special education support to identified students with an Individualized Education Plan. The CTI Coordinator works with the appropriate CTAE career pathway instructor to develop/modify/accommodate curriculum, testing, etc. based on the CTI student needs.

The CTAE career pathway for each CTI student is determined through the development of an Individual Education Plan (IEP), jointly developed by the IEP team (special education case manager, CTI Coordinator, student, parent or guardian, CTAE teacher, etc.). This plan should take into account the student’s long range career goals and short term objectives and the results of any Pre-Vocational Assessment, aptitude, interest inventories, etc. The student’s IEP will be written to include appropriate defined vocational goals and appropriate measurement for the stated goals.

The CTI Coordinator will assist students in the post-secondary transition planning process and support college and career readiness preparation.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are basic tasks that are carried out by the CTI Coordinator, who provides direct instruction to assist CTI students in successfully entering and participating in all existing career pathway programs.

1. Collaborate with CTAE instructors to provide adequate support for CTI students within CTAE career pathway programs and ensure delivery of accommodations and/or services.

2. Determine ways in which accommodations can be made to those requirements and/or programs for the student in conjunction with the appropriate instruction. Example: Assist in identifying strengths and weaknesses, abilities, interests and needs of the students and share information regarding all handicapping conditions.

3. Identify, obtain, and utilize media, materials, tools and equipment in the CTAE career pathway classes needed to meet the unique characteristics of CTI students.

4. Utilize the instructional media, materials and equipment in the career pathway lab areas for the unique characteristics of CTI students.

Examples:

  • Rework tests to accommodate the learner larger answers or fill in the blanks
  • Typing a handwritten test or oral notes
  • Using props or prompts to receive the correct response

5. As needed, provide related instruction for students as outlined by the appropriate CTAE career pathway instructor.

Examples: Administration of tests

  • Helping students set up and carry out study techniques
  • Monitor and adjust student’s time spent on task
  • Monitor and correct student’s behavior
  • Summarize reading assignments to ensure better comprehension
  • Help compile lecture notes and notebooks

6. Assist CTAE career pathway instructors in evaluating whether or not individual CTI students are meeting goals outlined in the IEP and assisting in determining class grade as needed.

7. Counsel regularly with CTAE career pathway instructors implementing career aspects of the IEP and attend IEP meetings as a representative for the CTAE career pathway instructors as needed.

8. Plan, support, and involve the CTI student in transition activities. Serve as the liaison for Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation and Georgia High School High Tech.

Examples: Preparation of a college and career portfolio, career-related field trips, speakers from industry, college visits, technical college program shadowing, community service, drivers license preparation programs, etc.

9. Plan, support, and involve the CTI student with membership in CTSO associated with the career pathway.

10. Plan, support, and involve the CTI student in CTI activities.

Examples: Competitive events, Fall Leadership Conference, Spring Leadership Conference, etc.

11. Determine the most appropriate job placement strategy for CTI students in conjunction with special education case manager, CTAE career pathway instructor, etc. Coordinator shall work with Work Based Learning Coordinator, ancillary services, and specialized placement organizations.

12. CTI Coordinator assures that the Pre-Vocational Assessment is administered to all 9th grade students with special needs.

13. CTI Coordinator conducts fundraising activities to support CTI program expenses, student trips, competition materials/supplies, etc.

14. CTI Coordinator shall take an active role in promoting and marketing the College and Career Academy to prospective students, parents, and community.

15. CTI Coordinator shall take an active role in College and Career Academy initiatives and activities.

Examples:

College and Career Readiness Portfolio activities, Community Service opportunities, Awards Night, CTAE Awareness Month, etc.

16. CTI Coordinator will publicize CTI activities/accomplishments via various media outlets.

17. CTI Coordinator participates in professional development. Membership in GACTE is highly encouraged.

18. CTI coordinator will supervise CTI paraprofessional.

19. All other duties as assigned.

Note: The IEP of the CTI student is a legal document written by the student’s special education case manager with input from the CTI Coordinator and CTAE career pathway teacher. The document is electronic. Confidential Student Support pages are generated in hard copy format and distributed to the CTAE career pathway teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Hold a valid teaching certificate in the area of Special Education
  • Attend and successfully complete the CTI Endorsement Program (Starting with CTI Summer Workshop and continuing during the school year until completed)
  • Complete a one year on-the-job internship under the direction of the Georgia Department of Education
  • Evidence of administration support from both CTAE and special education

Experience:

  • At least three years of Special Education Teaching Experience

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret information relevant to the position, including being able to speak effectively to small and large groups of people, and to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to articulate the vision and mission for the district and provide appropriate direction, guidance, and management skills to achieve them.

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.
