EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Career Academy, a dynamic high school dual enrollment program, is seeking a passionate and experienced Fire Science/EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) Instructor for a part-time (.5 FTE) position. This role is ideal for a dedicated professional with a background in fire service and emergency medical response who is eager to inspire and educate the next generation of first responders.
The instructor will deliver engaging, hands-on instruction aligned with both high school and college-level standards, preparing students for industry certifications and post-secondary success. The ideal candidate will bring real-world experience, strong communication skills, and a commitment to student achievement in a collaborative, career-focused learning environment.
Organizes and presents instruction in an instructional environment which helps students learn the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Design and deliver authentic, hands-on learning experiences that simulate real-world scenarios in fire science and emergency medical response, including live drills, simulations, and skill-based assessments.
- Develop and implement curriculum aligned with state standards, dual enrollment requirements, and industry certifications (e.g., EMR, CPR, Firefighter I).
- Create a classroom culture of professionalism and safety, modeling the expectations and behaviors of the fire and emergency services field.
- Utilize industry-standard equipment and tools to provide students with practical training in fire suppression, rescue operations, emergency medical care, and incident command.
- Collaborate with local fire departments, EMS agencies, and post-secondary institutions to enhance program relevance and provide students with exposure to career pathways.
- Assess student learning through performance-based evaluations, written assessments, and reflective practices that mirror real-world expectations.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and certifications in accordance with school and program guidelines.
- Support student success through mentorship, career guidance, and preparation for post-secondary education or entry-level employment in public safety fields.
- Participate in professional development to stay current with industry standards, instructional strategies, and safety protocols.
- Perform general teaching duties, including classroom management, lesson planning, parent communication, and participation in school-wide initiatives and meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
- Current or former employment as a firefighter, fire officer, or emergency responder with verifiable field experience.
- Valid Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification (or higher, such as EMT or Paramedic).
- Demonstrated knowledge of fire science, emergency medical services, and public safety protocols.
- Ability to design and deliver hands-on, scenario-based instruction aligned with industry standards.
- Strong communication, leadership, and classroom management skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary coursework in fire science, EMS, or related field.
Preferred:
- Valid teaching license or ability to obtain a Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement in Fire Science or Public Safety.
- Firefighter I and II certifications (IFSAC or ProBoard preferred).
- Instructor certifications (e.g., Fire Instructor I, CPR/First Aid Instructor, EMR Instructor).
- Experience working with high school or post-secondary students in an instructional or mentorship capacity.
- Familiarity with dual enrollment programs and collaboration with community colleges or technical institutions.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical to the success of this position. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups from all levels of the organization, including staff, principals, and central administration. Communication will include individual to large group presentations as well as written communications and reports. The individual must have effective listening skills.
ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS
The individual must have a solid background in assessment and have the ability to interpret data, which may be very complex and varied. Must be able to apply assessment strategies and link assessment data analysis to school improvement, curriculum, and professional development.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
Position requires the individual to be competent in a variety of methods in research and information gathering through technology. The ability to present and communicate through technology is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to demonstrate and participate in physically demanding activities typical of fire and emergency response, including:

- Lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Performing simulated rescue operations, including dragging dummies, climbing ladders, and navigating confined spaces.
- Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and crouching for extended periods during hands-on training exercises.
- Operating in outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions during drills and practical scenarios.
- Must be able to model and enforce safety protocols during all physical activities.
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to observe student performance and ensure safety during practical exercises.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to the achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
