The Pratt School of Engineering's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) provides vibrant educational and research programs dedicated to developing solutions to significant challenges facing our world. CEE features nearly 30 faculty members pursuing vital research projects such as providing clean water and environments to global populations, engineering the microbiomes that share human spaces to improve health, and mitigating and reversing the effects of climate change.

The Dean’s Office oversees the administration and business units of the school, including Undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral Education, Graduate Student Programs and services, Development, Alumni Affairs & Corporate Relations, and Communica tions & Marketing.

Occupational Summary

The CEE/Dean’s Office Communications Specialist is a talented storyteller who will develop and execute communications and marketing initiatives to highlight the work and advance the strategic goals of both the Pratt School of Engineering and CEE, working closely with the dean’s office, departmental and program leadership, and faculty. The position is integral to Duke Engineering’s growing communications and marketing team and collaborates with communicators across Duke University.

We’re seeking a proactive, creative individual eager to take the initiative and strategize to improve the visibility of CEE and Duke Engineering.

Work Performed

Reporting and communications strategy: Develop and maintain productive, positive relationships with CEE faculty and program leaders across campus; proactively initiate and attend relevant meetings to gain broad knowledge of current research, educational programs and faculty expertise in order to inform communications strategy. Coordinate coverage plans with communications managers in related programs across Duke. Assist in developing and executing communication strategies for school strategic vision (10%)

Writing, assembly, editing and multimedia content production: Write articles highlighting the research and educational strengths of Duke CEE and school priority initiatives with an eye towards narrative and storytelling when possible. Produce and coordinate multimedia content production such as photos, audio, and video, with team experts. Examples of work produced include long-form research features, alum profiles, student success stories, social media posts, press releases, and marketing communications content, including brochures and mailers focused on department and school achievements. (30%)

Publications and project management: Ability to help manage the production of departmental and school print projects, including editing and coordinating graphic design, photography, reviews, and distribution. Curate, assemble, edit, and produce regular e-newsletters and other communications touchpoints with visual/multimedia and written elements for Duke CEE and the school to keep audiences engaged and informed (15%)

Visual communications and design: Assisting creating visually engaging graphics and layouts for various platforms, including digital media, print materials, and presentations while upholding the school and university brand standards. Assemble visually appealing presentations and infographics translating complex concepts and data into clear messaging. (20%)

Executive communications support: Ability to assist the dean and senior communications and marketing leadership in writing, editing, proofreading, and creating speeches, presentations, and statements to ensure clarity, brand consistency, and impact. (25%)

Qualifications:

Education/Training

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in journalism, English or a related discipline.

Experience

Work requires two years of directly related writing experience. Prior working experience in an academic environment is a plus.

Skills

We’re looking for a creative and motivated communicator with:
  • A proven ability to tell compelling and creative stories in multiple formats that engage, inform, and inspire.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines with a high level of project and time management skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with attention to detail.
  • Strong proficiency in design concepts including layout and other graphic design fundamentals, with an attention to detail.
  • Experience in creating infographics, digital graphics, print materials, and presentations.
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and graphic design software.
  • Knowledge of video editing and motion graphics or illustration is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, project management system tools, email marketing tools like Emma, social media management tools, and content management system tools like WordPress/ Drupal.
  • Understanding how to reach different target audiences through different content channels.
  • Enthusiasm to work with many stakeholders and audiences to innovate, plan and develop successful and impactful communications.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team, including CEE faculty and staff, the Pratt communications and marketing team, graphic designers, and web experts, etc.
