Job Description

Certificated Transfer Request Directions 2026-2027

As we pass the midpoint of this school year, we are considering our staffing needs for the 2026-2027 school year. For staffing purposes, it is important to identify possible transfers within the system, as well as anticipated retirements and resignations. Transfer requests will be made through an online transfer request application. Applications must be submitted by June 1, 2026.

NOTE TO SCHOOL COUNSELORS AND MEDIA SPECIALISTS: We will post vacancies for these roles as they become available. Do not submit a transfer request unless you want to return to a classroom teaching position at another school.

2026-2027 Certificated Transfer Request

To complete your transfer request, you must:

  • Submit a transfer request application, listing up to 5 preferred sites.
  • Use your SMCPS email address.
  • Upload your Maryland Teaching certificate/license.
  • Upload a current resume that includes your position for the 2025-2026 school year.

When a transfer request application is submitted by June 1, 2026, you will be eligible to be interviewed and considered for vacancies before potential new hires are considered. Please understand that a principal must consider the needs of the school when making a recommendation to the Department of Human Resources for placement or employment. We honor such transfer requests when they are in the best interest of the school and the school system. Refer to Article 16 of the Negotiated Agreement or contact hrd@smcps.org with any questions.

You may revise your application one time only between January 30, 2026, and June 1, 2026. This allows you to update your list of up to 5 sites. To make a change to any of your original sites, email hrd@smcps.org. Due to TalentEd platform limitations, your original application will be removed, and you will need to submit a new one. Note: If you remove a site, you will no longer be considered for a transfer to that location.

If you do not plan to return for 2026-2027 (due to resignation, retirement, or leave of absence) and have not yet contacted Human Resources, please reach out to Dr. Dale Farrell, Chief of Staff, at dpfarrell@smcps.org. Per the Regular Contract, non-tenured teachers must submit resignation letters to Human Resources by May 1, and tenured teachers must submit resignation letters by July 15. Missing these deadlines may affect your Maryland teaching certificate/license.
