Public Relations Intern II: This posting is for if for a paid summer internship for the summer of 2025. The position is for a college level student who is a rising junior or rising senior who will be assigned to work in our Department of Public Relations. The rate of pay is $16.00 /per hour, up to 29 hours per week. The internship will start on May 16, 2025. of 2021.
The department tells the story of Henrico County through a variety of print, graphic, audio and video productions. Public Relations collaborates with county agencies and officials to develop and disseminate information and content that promotes, and increases understanding of general government activities, initiatives, and programs. Departmental services include news releases, news conferences, media relations, photography, graphic design, video production and the web-streaming of Board of Supervisors meetings. Public Relations operates HCTV and manages the general government’s official social media accounts.

Essential Duties
Public Relations Intern II: This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The student selected will be assigned to work in our Department of Public Relations.
Desired Student: Currently enrolled degree program such as, but not limited to, Mass Communications, Graphic Design, Journalism, English, Broadcasting or other related programs.
Desired GPA: 2.50
Work Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday are core hours but may require night and or weekend hours to support outside activities and events.

Expected Start Date: May 16, 2025
Expected End Date: on or by the start of the fall 2025 semester.
Internship Status: This is a paid internship position at the hourly rate of $16.00/hour, up to 29 hours per week.

The intern may be a part of a variety of duties to shadow, perform or provide:
- Supports community program activities by assisting with design, coordination, and/or dissemination of information relevant to the event.
- Research appropriate resources that provide the necessary information to complete assignment: marketing plan, video content, webpage etc.
- Manages and maintains databases and systems associated with the department’s inventory content of materials produced.
- Organizes materials for brochures, outreach handouts, newsletters etc.
- Assists with special projects.
- Performs related work and other duties as assigned.
The Desired Student should have:
- Interest in:
- Working with the public and county staff
- Planning, organizing, and engaging in clerical and technical work
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens are integral to the internship.
- Familiar with programs such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
- Good organizational skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to perform independently and follow directions is essential.
- Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively.
Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of:
- Henrico County's Public Relations daily operations
- How the department plans, organizes and engages with the community
- Duties and many activities staff are involved to keep the public informed
- Careers that exist within local government
Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA of 3.0 or better; prefer a college student in the junior or senior year of the relevant degree program;
Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience;
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the internship.

Interns are not entitled to a permanent position at the completion of an internship. The internship is designed to benefit the intern with the knowledge and skills gained through experiences provided during the course of the internship.
All internship positions will work for 29 hours or less per week.
