General Statement of Duties

Under the direction of the school principal, the general education teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a co-taught setting. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating and implementing instructional lesson plans for students in a combined classroom of no more than 10 kindergarten and first grade students with disabilities, fostering a supportive classroom environment, and collaborating with other educators, specialists, and families to support student success.


This classroom will be comprised of two educators-- a general education teacher and a special education teacher providing instruction aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning.



Essential Duties

Instructional Planning and Delivery:

  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods and instructional strategies to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Integrate technology and adaptive tools to enhance learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with the classroom special education teacher to provide instruction aligned to the Standards of Learning grade-level content with the support of division-aligned instructional materials
  • Instructs students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records and prepares reports on children and activities, as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates those objectives to students.
Individualized Education Program (IEPs):
  • Collaborates with the special education teacher, drafting and implementing IEP plans
  • Participates in IEP meetings as the general education teacher
  • Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
Classroom Management:
  • Establish a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect and understanding.
  • Implement behavior management strategies to support students' social and emotional development.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom conducive to learning.
  • Assists in the data collection and implementation of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Improvement Plans (BIP).
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with special education staff and related service providers
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about student progress and concerns.
Assessment and Reporting:
  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to evaluate student learning and development.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports on student performance.
  • Use assessment data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Collects and analyzes data to inform decision-making
Professionalism:
  • Maintains professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices. Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work. Strong desire to collaborate effectively with a special education co-teaching partner. Experience with a variety of evidence-based instructional practices as well as data collection and its utilization. Proficient with Microsoft and/or Google Suite and other related educational software. Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in elementary education.

Additional Information

The minimum salary for this 209-day position is $57,925 with a bachelor’s degree or $60,706 with a master’s. The annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date.
