Engineering Aide Internship II/III - Our Department of Public Utilities has a paid internship opportunities (for current college level students) who will support the Electrical Instrumentation and Computer Staff on GIS and Supervisor Control Data Acquisition (SCADA) projects. If the selected students need academic credit, either as a requirement or elective for your program, we can accommodate. The desired area of student for this internship include: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Geographic Information Science, Instrumentation or electronics studies or related program.
Internships are intended to provide the intern with basic experiential exposure to a field of interest. The intern must bring a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities and finish the internship having gained basic experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field. All internships are limited to up to 29 hours per week.

Essential Duties
DPU Systems Computer/Electrical Intern II/III - The hiring selection and level is dependent on the qualification of the successful applicant and the needs of the County for this position. This is a paid internship for the summer of 2025 for a undergraduate or graduate level student to work in our Public Utilities Department with the Electrical, Instrumentation and Computer staff on GIS and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) projects.
The SCADA system is used for controlling, monitoring, and analyzing industrial devices and processes. The system consists of both software and hardware components and enables remote and on-site gathering of data from the industrial equipment.
Desired Area of Study: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Geographic Information Science, Instrumentation or electronics studies or related program.
Desired GPA: 2.50
Desired Student: College-level rising sophomore, junior or senior
Work Hours: M-F, within 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, 29 hours or less per week
Work Location: DPU Administrative Offices at 4305 E. Parham Road. Henrico, VA 23228. You may be required to travel to various sites throughout Henrico County.
Internship Status: Paid, $16.00 per hour for undergraduate level students and $17.00 per hour for graduate level students.
The student may be a part of a variety of hands-on duties to assist, provide or perform:
- Support staff using the SCADA system for water and wastewater environment.
- Maintenance, troubleshoot and resolve problems or issues of SCADA system used to monitor, control and automation of water and wastewater treatment.
- Coordinate with plant operations, mechanical and electrical maintenance staff to make additions or modifications to the existing SCADA system when necessary.
- Creating new or re-writing existing programmable logic controller (PLC) programs as necessary.
- Creating, modifying, and configuring human machine interface (HMI) software, including the modification of existing HMI screens, configuration of new HMI screens, and the addition or modification of parameters and tags.
- Troubleshoot and resolve problems and perform regular maintenance of the SCADA communication network and associated hardware.
- Respond to emergencies and assist in identifying issues with the operation of the SCADA system.
- Assist in creating and maintaining technical documentation, procedures, and training materials.
- GIS Projects could include Mapping, Metadata creation and update, Data development, Cartographic creation, Model creation, Web development and ArcGIS Online content organization and development
- Asset Management
The desired student(s) should have:
- Basic knowledge of networking and configuring network hardware will be a plus.
- Any GIS experience and knowledge will be a plus.
- Any knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC programs will be a plus.
- Any knowledge of FactoryTalk View software by Rockwell Automation will be a plus.
Through the course of the internship the student will gain knowledge of:
- Understand the importance of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System
- See how portable water gets to the customers within Henrico
- See how wastewater is transmitted to the Water Reclamation facility from the customers within Henrico.
- Learn and understand the importance of and how water and wastewater pump stations operate.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Current students pursuing a college degree in a field relevant to internship or post-secondary vocational/technical training in a trade or craft that is relevant to the internship; GPA of 2.00 or better; prefer a college student in the junior or senior year of the relevant degree program.
Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience;
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
