The Duke Toxicology Program at the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Division (OEM) provides toxicological evaluations and risk assessments for potentially hazardous substances in consumer and commercial arts and craft product formulations. Evaluations include an assessment for regulatory compliance against federal, state, and international laws regulating consumer product hazard labeling and worker hazard communication. The evaluation process includes the application of a Toxicology Data Base Management System (DMS). The DMS is an internally-developed computerized expert system that applies toxicological risk assessment paradigms to produce confidential reports to clients. The DMS requires accurate input of qualitative and quantitative product information.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The data technician will help the program in reviewing and entering (promptly and accurately) analytical data in order to properly evaluate product formulations for safety and compliance. In addition, the data technician will review and enter confidential product formulations for proper toxicological analyses. The position will require the following:

  • Learn to utilize the DMS effectively for accurately documenting product formulations and analytical data related to arts and craft consumer products
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding topics of proprietary origin and impact.
  • Interpret information on laboratory reports for proper documentation and processing in the DMS.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with external clients to ensure proper and accurate product formula documentation.
  • Ability to problem-solve, challenge the status quo, and communicate effectively and amicably with the Toxicology Program staff members.
