PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Literacy Coordinator is responsible for developing, planning, managing, supporting, and organizing professional learning for the Literacy programs within the schools and provides leadership for district-wide Literacy professional learning initiatives. This person provides direction and leadership for the administration and coordination of the Literacy programs in support of effective instructional practices, communication and operation efficiency in all Newton County Schools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Education, or related field, preferred
  • Certification/Licensure: Must hold or be eligible for Georgia Teaching Certification in the area of Reading or Language Arts; Leadership Certification strongly preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of supervisory and/or administrative experience preferably in education and 3 years of classroom teaching experience required

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  1. Provides professional development to ensure that all teachers of Reading implement evidence-based practices in the development of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  2. Oversees the development and enhancement of the English Language Arts curriculum for instructional programs and provides professional development to teachers and administration in the development and maintenance of the English Language Arts curriculum.
  3. Provides professional development in effective instructional practices and communication that supports high levels of instruction using research-based data driven best practices, effective classroom consultation, and program evaluation.
  4. Provides professional learning on school system data to determine trends and to implement strategies to meet and exceed national student achievement goals.
  5. Provides professional development in how to evaluate and select instructional materials, supplies, equipment and textbooks to support the English Language Arts curriculum.
  6. Provides professional development to administrators and teachers in evaluating and improving classroom instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  7. Assists in the planning and development of District and school-wide instructional in-service programs for allowable participants to assist in raising the level of instructional performance and student reading proficiency.
  8. Manages and coordinates professional development training for English Language Arts teachers
  9. Stays current in laws, requirements and national trends.
  10. Interfaces and collaborates with GADOE counterparts on districtwide literacy professional learning needs.
  11. Provides professional learning on the field test and revision process relating to the English Language Arts curriculum, ensuring teacher input.
  12. Performs other Title II, Part A allowable duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
