Position Summary:

The Theater and Dance department seeks a passionate and energetic teacher to fill a part-time term Dance Instructor position for the fall and winter terms of the 2024-2025 school year. Candidates should be interested in being part of a collaborative group of teachers and working with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community.

Position Requirements

The ideal candidate should have the ability to teach beginning through advanced levels of at least two of the following genres: contemporary, jazz, street styles, commercial jazz funk, ballet, modern, traditional cultural dances, social dances or musical theater dance.

Additional requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Dance or related field is preferred.
  • Proficiency in developing and teaching pre-professional level lesson plans and choreography.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational or studio setting for a minimum of 2 years. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experience or interest in diversity and cultural competency education (conferences, seminars, in-service programs, coursework, independent study).
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
  • Willingness to enforce all school policies and rules governing student behavior.

Accountabilities

While individual responsibilities will vary from one faculty position to another, the major job duties of term faculty members include the following:

  • Teaching: Teach advanced levels of technique classes three to four days per week in the late afternoon/early evening. In order to meet the intellectual needs of the school’s talented and highly motivated students, teachers are expected to be dedicated to daily preparation for the best possible classes.
  • Cultural Competency: Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.

Dance Instructors are also accountable for:

  • Collaborate with two other instructors to team teach and design curriculum.
  • Collaborate with Athletic Training staff on supporting students through injuries and rehabilitation.
  • Instruct through verbal and physical demonstration of movement vocabulary.
  • Maintain continuity and consistency in the Theater and Dance curriculum, follow departmental guidelines for content and assessment, and meet with the Dance Director and/or the Chair of the Theater department to discuss student experience and progress.
