Job Title: MUSCP - Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA)- Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology/Oncology

Job Summary/ Purpose: The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is trained to deliver primary and specialized health care to patients with a variety of acute and chronic illnesses. Responsibilities also include providing health maintenance and disease prevention based on appropriate age and concomitant risk factors. Following established protocols, nurse

practitioners/physician assistants assume responsibility for patient care management of a variety of patient populations. The APP demonstrates leadership skills, establishes effective relationships with patients, their families and members of patient care. The APP will function within the requirements of the State of South Carolina Board of Nursing or SC Board of Medical Examiners including designation of supervising/collaborating physician, alternate physicians and written protocols/scopes of practice guidelines, updated annually.

The APP in this position will primarily be inpatient based for the pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT service and participate in daytime service to include 13 12 hr shifts per 4 week block. 2 of these shifts per 4 week block will be weekend shifts. Duties will include chemotherapy writing, history and physical, admission orders, daily progress notes, care coordination, and performing procedures.

The inpatient APP will have excellent support from outpatient APPs to aid in continuity of care and patient transitions.

Hours per week: 40

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: Thirteen 12 hour shifts per 4 week block, including 2 weekend shifts per 4 week block plus participation in weekly BMT meeting, Tumor Board, and Inpatient Review Meeting 
 

Patient Population Focus: Inpatient, Outpatient, Infusion Suite, Management/Consultation.

Patient Population Age Range: 0 years-21 years

Required Training and Experience   

Required Minimum Training: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

  • Physician Assistant

or

  • APRN License Type/Certification:
    • Primary Care Pediatric NP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PCPNP/PNP): Pediatric patients (birth to age 21), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
    • Family NP (FNP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.

Preferred Training and Experience

Preferred Training: Physician Assistant (PA) or if APRN, License Type/Certification identified below:

  • Physician Assistant

or

  • APRN License Type/Certification:
    • Pediatric Acute Care NP (PACNP): Pediatric pts (birth to age 21), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable or technologically dependent.

Preferred Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience as a PA or NP working with Pediatric Hematology/Oncology patients.

Degree of Supervision:
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Job Duties (list job tasks)

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
    • Lumbar puncture with and without intrathecal chemotherapy, bone marrow aspirate, bone marrow biopsy
  • Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law

Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
