The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Outpatient Clinic Manager. Under direct supervision, the PCT performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respirations, weight, height, and head circumference), obtains lab samples, and records or inputs information to patients' medical record. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.

Job Description

Independently performs and documents a variety of clinical procedures according to policy and procedures.

  • Using appropriate equipment, obtain and document vital signs- height, weight, head circumference, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respirations, and temperature as appropriate to patient population.
  • Completes chief complaint, reason for visit, change in patient condition, and all patient screenings for each visit.
  • Assist patients with comfort related needs.
  • Prepare patients for exams and all office procedures.
  • Obtains, documents, and reports any abnormal findings to appropriate provider.
  • Facilitate a positive learning environment for students, orient and train new staff in assigned areas.
  • Assist in teaching patient care under direction of the Clinical Lead or Provider
  • Appropriate use and documentation of unit or organizational level standing orders.
  • Knowledge and compliance to practice within the clinical scope of a PCT.

Provides safe and effect nursing care to patients and families. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families, and employees.

  • Demonstrates practice that reflects knowledge and performance related to the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Utilize standard precautions, contact isolation, and respiratory isolation according to policy.
  • Follows policy and procedure for administering and delivering medications prescribed by an authorized provider including allergy check.
  • Able to articulate and implement Unit Safety/Fire Plan/Emergency management resources.
  • Demonstrates knowledge for utilizing incident reporting for unexpected events and GOOD Catches.
  • Demonstrates correct body mechanics in work situations to maintain safety of self, patient, and other employees.
  • Utilizes 2 patient identifiers to ensure accurate patient identification.

Utilizes appropriate communication/documentation tools and devices in providing patient care and documenting appropriate information in the patient record.

  • Complete triage, regulatory checklist, and medical reconciliation as part of the complete triage process.
  • Report abnormal findings or concerns to Clinical Lead or Provider.
  • Review and follow-up on patient testing; report per clinic protocol.
  • Maintain medication and immunization records.
  • Complete medication pre-authorizations.
  • Documents any appropriate charges and supporting documentation in EMR as applicable.
  • Adheres to policy & procedures regarding patient phone calls and in basket message

Identify patient and collect specimens as ordered. Follows policy and procedure for task performance and documentation.

  • Collects specimens as ordered, label and document according to policy and procedure.
  • Reports specimen labeling errors.
  • Utilizes 2 patient identifiers to ensure accurate patient identification.
  • Completes Point of Care Testing as ordered, and documents results as ordered.

Perform clerical duties and ensure overall financial well-being of the clinic operations.

  • Schedule tests and procedures
  • Fax requisitions/consult forms, utilize tube system.
  • Utilizes Computer systems (intranet, EMR, and email)
  • Complete in-basket messages according to scope of practice.
  • Ensure clinical spaces are stocked, organized, and clear of clutter

Additional Job Description

Requirements include one of the following:

  • High school diploma or GED required with a minimum of one year of patient care work experience in a health care facility, at the time of hire.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • High school diploma or GED required and required enrollment in a healthcare related program within two years of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED required and a current MUHA or MUSCP Care Team Member.
  • Successful completion of a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant course at an accredited institution or equivalent training.
  • EMT or Paramedic certification.
  • Nursing student enrolled in an accredited institution with the completion of nursing fundamentals course.
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.   Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
