Title: History Instructor

Job Duties:

  1. Teach all levels of History (four classes per trimester), including courses on Asian Economic History, Asian History, Economic History, and U.S. History as indicated by teaching experience, research & publications, and/or graduate-level coursework.
  2. Instruct through lectures, demonstrations, and discussions, often around a Harkness table. In order to meet the intellectual needs of the school’s talented and highly motivated students, teachers are expected to be dedicated to daily preparation for the best possible classes.
  3. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  4. Prepare, administer and grade tests and assignments.
  5. Prepare materials and classrooms for all class activities. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  6. Maintain accurate and complete student records. Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, social development and physical health.
  7. Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
  9. Advise student clubs and organizations, and serve on committees as needed.
  10. Reside in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life, with regular dormitory duty per week.
  11. Serve as mentor to student advisees throughout the student’s time at Exeter, and serve as the main liaison between the advisee’s family/guardian and Exeter.

Job Requirements:

Master’s or equivalent degree in History, or related field.

20 months (two academic years) of part-time or full-time teaching experience as a Teacher, Teaching Assistant, or Instructor at secondary level or post-secondary level.

Experience must include teaching Asian Economic History. Will accept coursework in this area at the level of Master’s thesis or higher in lieu of experience teaching Asian Economic History classes.

Criminal and driving background checks required.

Phillips Exeter Academy is a private boarding school. For their first 10 years of employment, full-time regular faculty members are required to live in Academy-provided housing during the months that school is in session and students are in residence. In exchange for this housing, responsibilities such as dorm supervision and student advising are assigned to the employee. During the summer months when school is not in session, faculty members may maintain occupancy of their assigned residential unit.
